Kent Ross is a highly accomplished Australian conductor, composer, and musical director with over two decades of experience in music education, orchestral conducting, and musical theatre. A passionate advocate for the development of Australian music, Kent has a diverse and dynamic career that spans a variety of musical genres, including orchestral, film, musical theatre, and contemporary music.
Early Career & Education
Kent Ross began his musical journey at the age of 16, studying piano and voice, before conducting his first theatre production at 20. His passion for music led him to pursue formal education, first at Box Hill College of Music, where he earned multiple diplomas in composition, film scoring, and songwriting. He later completed a Bachelor of Music in Composition.
Continuing to refine his classical piano and choral conducting skills, Kent studied at the Australian Catholic University, earning a Bachelor of Music in Classical Piano and Choral Conducting. His early work in liturgical music and choir training fostered a deep appreciation for vocal performance and conducting.
Musical Theatre Leadership
Kent's career in musical theatre began with his role as conductor for a stage adaptation of Labyrinth. His subsequent work on Cinderella, where he orchestrated the entire score from a piano arrangement, set the foundation for a rich and diverse career in musical theatre. Over the years, Kent has been the Musical Director for more than 35 theatrical productions, including Spamalot, Blood Brothers, The Addams Family, Legally Blonde, and The Boy From Oz. His outstanding contributions to these productions have earned him multiple nominations and commendations from the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria.
Orchestral Conducting & Composition
In 2016, Kent further honed his conducting expertise by completing a Master of Contemporary Music Practice (Conducting) at Box Hill College, where he studied under the guidance of renowned conductor Graham Abbott. Since then, he has led a wide range of orchestras across Victoria, from classical repertoires to film scores such as Star Wars. Kent's versatility extends across genres, from musical theatre to jazz, and even gothic rock and heavy metal. He has also been in demand for conducting contemporary dance works and has worked with secondary schools to lead student and professional orchestras in musical productions.
Currently, Kent serves as Chief Conductor for both the Casey Philharmonic Orchestra and the Engineering Music Society Orchestra of Melbourne University, where he continues to inspire and lead a new generation of musicians.

Kent has a strong commitment to music education and the development of young talent. He regularly works with schools and youth orchestras, fostering the growth of both student musicians and professional ensembles. His passion for teaching and mentoring the next generation of musicians is a cornerstone of his career.
